Paul Manafort, former campaign manager for President Donald Trump, has been released from prison by the US authorities for serving the remainder of his sentence at home, due to fears of Covid-19 illness.
Manafort spent a little more than a year in prison from his seven and a half years sentence.
Manafort, 71, was convicted of conspiracy and fraud charges after an investigation by the US Justice Department into allegations of Russian interference in the US presidential election.
There are more than 2,800 confirmed cases of Covid-19 among the federal prison population, and 50 deaths.
According to the latest data released by the Federal Prison Office, there are 139584 federal prisoners in federal custody, and 11,235 in community facilities, in addition to about 36,000 employees. According to the office, 2818 prisoners and 262 employees have been infected with the Corona virus.
There were no confirmed cases of the virus in FCI Loreto prison in Pennsylvania, where Manafort was serving his sentence.
Last month, Manafort's lawyers sought to lock him in his home instead of in prison, arguing that his "life and the health ailments he was suffering" would put his life at risk in the event of an infection.
What happens in American prisons?
At the end of March, US Attorney General William Barr notified the Federal Prison Office of allowing non-dangerous prisoners, who belong to the group most at risk from infection, to live in their homes. His memo indicated that "some crimes, such as sexual crimes, make a prisoner ineligible for domestic detention."
In April, a bar of the Federal Prison Office notified the transfer of prisoners at risk of Covid-19 from three federal facilities grappling with the outbreak, and asked officials to review prisoner cases in other similar facilities the impact of the virus on its operations.
The Federal Prison Office reported that 2,471 prisoners have been transferred to home confinement because of the epidemic since March 26.
The governor of Pennsylvania ordered the state's prison administration to allow the release of non-violent and at-risk prisoners if they were infected with the Corona virus, for a specified period of time.
Although the administration has said that up to 1,800 prisoners are eligible, only 150 have been released as of May 12, according to official data.
US prisons, both federal and state, have been criticized for their handling of the virus. Jurists continue to demand the release of non-violent prisoners.
Critics say prisoners are at risk of contracting the disease due to overcrowding and unsanitary conditions. Prisoners often lack soap, and the use of hand sanitizer is prohibited because it contains alcohol.
The American Civil Liberties Union expects 100,000 additional deaths due to Covid-19 "if the numbers of prisoners are not reduced dramatically and immediately," noting that health conditions in US facilities are "much lower" than those in other western countries.
Another former Trump aide, his former attorney, Michael Cohen, 53, is expected to be released from prison in New York later this month.
He also appealed to a number of other prominent convicts, including financial fraud fraud Bernie Madoff, 82, and comedian Bill Cosby, 82, to release them due to the outbreak of the virus.
Who is Paul Manafort?
Manafort served as Trump's campaign manager from June to August 2016, when he was forced to resign because of his previous work in Ukraine.
He was convicted of a series of charges related to bank fraud, tax evasion, conspiracy, and witnesses in two separate cases related to his work as a political advisor.
Manafort agreed to cooperate with Special Adviser Robert Mueller's investigation, in a deal to obtain a reduced sentence. However, the petition deal collapsed after only two months, as investigators said Manafort had repeatedly lied to the government.
He was sentenced in March 2019, and his prison term is due to end in 2024.
